Other words that are commonly misused

• bad/badly

bad = describes a person, place, thing, or state of being
The movie was bad.

badly = describes an action
The cut was stitched badly.

• its/it's

its = belonging to it
Its clean exterior mocked the chaotic mess inside.

it's = it is
It's going to be hot today.

• lose/loose

lose = to have lost something
I do not want to lose the race.

loose = free, not fastened
The running clothes were loose and comfortable.

• principal/principle

principal = the person in charge of a school; the main person, thing, or concept; the main amount of money
Mr. Jones the mean principal at school.

principle = a basic truth or standard
Not telling lies is a principle that he upholds.
